Q:What is your legal background?
A:I am a qualified Barrister-at-Law and I have a BA (Hons) Law Degree. I specialise in Criminal law which is "a law unto itself"!
Q:When did you first enter politics?
A:I first got involved in politics in 1986 when I became a Solihull Borough Councillor.
Q:What is your favourite sport?
A:Football of course! While I was really keen to be a lawyer it nearly didn't happen as I was so interested in football. I was the Birmingham School's 100m sprint champion so I could run exceptionally fast. That is why I got picked to take part in the Aston Villa Under Fourteens at Villa Park stadium.
Q:What did you study at University?
A:I went to Keel University to study Law and English Literature. In my final year I won the Gray's Inn Advocacy Prize.
Q:When you first started working in Law what did you do?
A:My first job as a barrister was as a junior at The Temple in London. I really ejoyed my first posting as it was in the Chambers of John Mortimer. He wrote the series of books called "Rumpole of the Bailey" which was eventually made into a TV series.
Q:How did you find it being a black barrister?
A:Despite working very hard I got given very little work in my Chambers. It seemed that some people did not like black people barristers. I choose to move back to Birmingham and found new Chambers which worked very well for me and I became very successful.

Q:Where or how did you learn to speak in public?
A:Over the last 15 years I have been a practising Barrister-at-Law; a District Councillor; television presenter; and over the last four years as a member of the House of Lords.
Q:Which public speaker do you admire the most?
A:Anthony Wedgwood Benn M.P. He is one of the few politicians who speaks with passion and not from a spin doctor's brief.
Q:What is the most moving speech you have ever heard?
A:Dr Martin Luther King. His 'I have a dream' speech still sends goosebumps down my body.
Q:What do you think is the most important ingredient of a good speech?
A:Brevity.
Q:Do you have a tip for aspiring public speakers?
A:Be well prepared, whatever the audience.
Q:What would you say to anyone considering a career as a lawyer?
A:Qualifying as a lawyer is a passport to a career of immense variety, intellectual satisfaction and personal fulfilment. I would recommend it to anyone - whatever their colour or creed.
